Studies on the Pulmonary Function in Pregnancy

Abstract
To investigate the effect of pregnancy on the pulmonary functions, vital capacity, ma¡þximum voluntary ventilation, maximum mid-expiratory flow and timed vital capacity were measured in the same age ranged 17 healthy non-pregnant and 35 pregnant woman of 28 to 43 weeks gestation.
The results summarized are as follows:
1. The mean values of age, height, body weight and body surface area in experimen¡þtal groups were 27.5 years, 157.1C,-n, 50. 3kg and 1.49:n2 in non-pregnant women, while 27. 0 years, 157.1Cm, 58.0kg and 1.58m2 in 28-35 weeks gestation, 25. 9 years, 156. 5 Cm, 58. 3kg and 1.58m2 in 3643 weeks gestation.
2. The vital capacity was 3335¡¾107ml in non-pregnant woman, while 3496¡¾84m1 in 28-35 weeks gestation and 3234¡¾85ml in 36-43 weeks gestation.
3. The maximum voluntary ventilation was 105.6¡¾3.6L/min in non-pregnant women, while 101. 9¡¾4.9L/min in 28-35 weeks gestation and 97.1¡¾3.7L/min in 3643 weeks gestation.
4. The maximum mid-expiratory flow was 200.1¡¾10.3L/min in non-pregnant women, while 209.0¡¾8.1L/min in 28-35 weeks gestation and 202.7¡¾11.7L/min in 3643 weeks gestation.
5. Timed vital capacity in the first second was 84. 1 ¡¾ 1. 0% in non-pregnant women, while 83.2¡¾1.0% in 28-35 weeks and 84.7¡¾0.9% in 36-43 weeks gestation.
